Project Green
PROJECT GREEN is a new STEPS project for 2011 that focuses on introducing new, ‘greener’ dancers to the company and also serves as a research and development period for the 2012 STEPS major season Try Hard.
Try Hard is inspired by the veritable lack of inspiration in Australia’s young people today and connects with the ultimate Australian schoolyard insult of calling someone a “try hard”. It explores the notion that this common insult is indicative of a much darker and deeper Australian cultural phenomenon that leads to apathy, boredom and unrealized potential.
The aim of PROJECT GREEN is to research this idea by engaging with a diverse range of young people, at a diverse range of schools; public, private, inner city, outer metro, regional. The target age range is 11-15; the age at which young people are transitioning from primary school to high school, from childhood to adolescence.
STEPS will partner with dance psychologist Shona Erskine to run workshops at the different schools. The workshops will facilitate discussion with students and also include dance/theatre activities, to gather research. This research would then inform the development of the 2012 major season.
The schools workshops would be Phase 1 of PROJECT GREEN. Phase 2 would involve a one-week intensive workshop experience at the King Street Arts Centre in the October school holidays, for students who wish to remain involved with the project as well as other young dancers who hadn’t been reached at schools workshops.
